Today, I am going to show you how to unlock your most valuable wealth-creating asset so you can enhance your performance, productivity and profitability.
Of course I’m talking about your brain.
How many of you would like to have a Superbrain and learn faster? Anyone have too much to learn, but too little time? How many of you would like to have a better memory?
How about names? Have you ever met somebody, you get their name, and seconds later it just disappears from your mind? Then you get it again, and what happens? You still can’t remember it. One of the reasons why it's a challenge is because no one's taught us how to remember people's names.
A person’s name is the sweetest sound to a person's ears. How are you going to show someone you are going to care about their finances, future and family if you don’t care enough to remember their name?
There are three keys. I want you to remember MOM. M.O.M.
The M stands for motivation. Let's say you have trouble remembering names. I guarantee you, you don’t remember all the names, but you don't forget all the names either. Is that fair? I always say that genius leaves clues. And there are reasons why you remember some people's names and forget others.
It’s because usually one of these three things is missing. Your motivation could be missing. With some of them, you're really motivated to remember their name. Maybe they’re a good business contact, or maybe it's someone you're attracted to. There’s some kind of inherent motivation.
Motivation is one of the keys to learning. There are two things that a coach or a parent can’t pass onto somebody. Motivation and an open mind. If you come with these two things, you're going to be successful. Because I can't affect your motivation. You have to. It’s something that you control. On a scale of 0 to 10, you know what that happens to be.
The other half of the equation is you have to have an open mind. Someone could be incredibly motivated, but if they're not open-minded to learn something new, are they going to learn? No. Because zero times anything is going to be what? Zero.
A lot of my work is training professionals like coaches, managers and leaders, people who have to impact other people, and looking at these philosophies of accelerated learning. Learning theory is also teaching theory. How you get people to act. So as a parent, that's something you want to be able to think of. Maybe you can't shape the behaviors of somebody, but you can shape their values and what’s most important to them.
I think one of the most important values is growth. People are hooked on growth and hard work and the efforts reinforcing that. So motivation is so important. Let's say you have trouble remembering people's names.
But there is a suitcase here with $1,000,000 cash in it. Imagine that. If you just remember the name of the next person you meet in this room, that money is yours. Raise your hand if you're going remember that person's name. Now how come we have a roomful of memory experts all of a sudden?
Did your capacity or potential for remembering names change at all? No. But all of a sudden you could do it. Why? Because you wanted to do it. You were motivated.
So when you are meeting someone new, start by doing a quick motivation check. Ask yourself: Why do I want to remember this person's name? Maybe you want to make a new friend. Or make a deal. Or practice what you are learning today. Remember: Reasons reap results.
The O in M.O.M. stands for Observation. A lot of people complain to me that they have trouble remembering people's names, and they blame their retention. It has nothing to do with your retention. It has everything to do with your attention.
We’re showing you time and time again that your brain is a supercomputer. It can do so many things. You can remember one name. It’s like one or two words. You have the power to be able to do that.
Years ago I met President Clinton for the second time. How many people would agree, regardless of politics, that he has charisma? That he’s a great connector, right? A great communicator. What a lot of people don't know is he's got an incredible memory. A fantastic memory. He remembered my name. Not only that, but he recalled our last conversation. And I remember asking him because I always want to know how people do it. I believe there's always a method behind the magic. That genius leaves clues.
And here’s the thing: When I'm talking to him, it's like nobody else exists. Have you ever been with somebody like that? They’re just focused completely on you? And they're not looking around the room seeing who's more important? Do you feel that when people's attention strays? Or they're talking to themselves. They're not listening, instead they are waiting for their turn to talk. Thinking about how they're going to react and respond. And you can’t listen to two conversations, one with somebody else and one with yourself.
So be present. And he's got this incredibly powerful presence, this incredible memory. I think President Clinton’s incredible memory and powerful presence comes from being powerfully present with people.
So with motivation, you care about remembering names. Observation is you're present with them so you can remember their name.
And finally, the last M is the mechanics. The mechanics are the simple tools on how to remember a name or learn a language or remember what you read or how to give a speech without notes. But the mechanics are simple: B.E. S.U.A.V.E.
B = Believe
- When you tell yourself you’re bad at remembering names, you are fighting for your limitations. And if you fight for your limitations, you get to keep them. All behavior is belief-driven.
E = Exercise
- Remembering a name is a skill, which takes effort and practice. Practice makes progress. Practice makes permanent.
S = Say It
- When you say someone’s name, you get to hear it twice: once from the person and once from yourself. Saying the name also ensures you heard it correctly
U = Use It
- Use their name three or four times in conversation.
A = Ask
- Everyone’s favorite subject is themselves. For various names, you can ask questions like “How do you spell it?” “Who were you named after?” “Where is it from?” and “What does it mean?”
V = Visualize
- Most of us are better with faces than we are with names. If someone’s name is Mark, imagine putting a checkmark on their forehead. Your brain works off of reminders.
E = End It
- When you end the conversation, say goodbye to the person by name.
